Healing and defeat

In a fight, your character eats healing items from the bank on its own. If your HP reaches 0 you are defeated: the fight stops and your equipped gear loses durability.

The short version

  • Keep healing items in the bank before a fight. Your character eats when HP drops to 50% of max HP or lower.
  • It eats the smallest heal first, so your best food is kept for last.
  • Running out of healing items does not stop the fight. That is how defeats happen.
  • A defeat stops the fight and costs every equipped piece 1 durability. You keep your items and coins.
  • Other activities slowly heal you while you work.

When does my character eat?

Whenever your HP is at 50% of max HP or lower during a fight. It eats until HP is back above that line or the healing items run out. It also eats before the first round, so you can start a fight with low HP.

Rebuilding these places raises that line, so your character eats sooner:

They add up, to at most 90% of max HP.

Which healing items are eaten first?

The item that heals least is eaten first, such as Soldier's ration. Of the same item, Normal goes before High quality. A high-quality item heals 1.5× its listed HP.

Is a fight safe to leave running?

Yes, if the enemy's biggest hit (after your damage reduction) is no more than the HP where your character eats, and you still have healing items. Then you cannot be defeated. The fight gear guide shows this for each fight, and the overnight guide shows how much to pack.

What if I run out?

  • Out of healing items: the fight goes on, and you can be defeated.
  • Out of arrows: the fight is blocked. Nothing is lost, and it goes on when you have arrows again.
  • So pack more healing items than you think you need.

How do I get HP back outside a fight?

Any other activity heals you a little each time an action finishes: about 1 HP for every 5 seconds the action takes. With nothing chosen, you do not heal. A defeat also refills your HP.

What does a defeat cost?

  • The fight stops. Your character does nothing until you choose a new activity.
  • Your HP refills. You keep all your items and coins.
  • Every equipped piece loses 1 durability. A piece that already has 0 is lost.
  • Gear only loses durability when you are defeated, never from normal fighting. Most gear survives 2 defeats and is lost on the next one. A piece's page says if it is different.
  • A damaged piece keeps working while equipped, but it breaks if you unequip it.

Exact numbers

  • Your character eats while HP ≤ max HP × line ÷ 100, rounded down. The line starts at 50%, rises with the places above, and stops at 90%.
  • Eating order: the item with the smallest listed heal first. Of the same item, Normal before High quality.
  • Healing outside fights: the action's time ÷ 5,000 ms, rounded down, at least 1 HP per action.
