Your character keeps working while the game is closed, for up to 48 hours. This page shows what 8 hours of each activity uses, so you can stock up before you leave.

Before you leave

Pick one activity. Only that activity runs while you are away.
Gathering needs no materials, so it never runs out.
Making things: check the first table and bank enough materials. When they run out, the work stops. Nothing is lost, but the rest of the time does nothing.
Fights: bank enough healing items, and arrows for a bow fight (second table). Then check Can I leave it running? on the Fight page.
Check the bank has room. If the item you make needs a new slot and none is free, the work stops. Drops that do not fit are thrown away.
Close the game. Time away counts for up to 48 hours. When you come back, Welcome back shows what you got.

Bank at least that much HP of healing items for a full night, more if your damage reduction is low. Defence, gear power and a shield against armed enemies all lower the damage. See Getting ready for fights.

Is it safe to leave a fight running?

Yes, while both of these are true:

You have healing items in the bank.
The enemy's biggest hit, after your damage reduction, is no bigger than the HP at which your character eats.

Your character eats when HP drops to 50% of max HP, even before the first round. A hit no bigger than that cannot take you from above it to 0. The Fight page checks this for you: look for Safe while healing items last.

Rebuilding Plague chapel (+5) and the sick house (+10) makes your character eat sooner, up to 90% of max HP. More: healing and defeat.
Out of healing items: the fight goes on, and you can be defeated. A defeat stops the fight and costs every equipped piece 1 durability. Bring more than the night needs.
Out of arrows: the fight stops. Nothing bad happens; it waits until you have arrows again.
Bow fights need the bow equipped the whole time. A bow cannot be used in a melee fight.
